In 1981, the MTV network was launched with footage of a literal launch. Specifically, footage of the Apollo 11 space shuttle lifting off, followed by an astronaut planting a flag on the surface of the moon. This imagery was iconic, and became a consistent part of the company’s branding for decades to come.
Nearly 40 years later, MTV decided it was time to revisit this material, and I was asked to conceptualize an updated version of the MTV Moon Landing brand film. Below are two directions. Each draws influence from the original’s narrative while presenting the story in two distinctly different styles.
